The barrel seat is critical for caliber choice. The 1911 was released in 45 acp and the feed ramp is the front of the magwell in the frame. When they started to make 9mm they would not feed reliabil with a GI style ramp and barrel. Soon after the solution was developed, a ramped frame and barrel to support the smaller calibers. When building a 1911 in 45 ramped barrel it’s not needed. If you’re building a 9mm or other smaller caliber it’s required
