Shaping a GI 1911 Frame tang for .250 beavertail

1911 Frame Shapping

The standard 1911 GI frame can support both GI and Beavertail grip safeties. The original design was just a grip safety. To add some control and remove the 1911 grip bite builders introduced a wrap around beavertail grip safety design. To shape a frame from GI to a .250 radius you will need a beavertail filing jig or a mill. The jig is a simple template for you to file the frame down and complete the .250 radius. Just follow the jig with a file to remove the material until the beavertail fits and swings freely up and down. Remember to add clearance for your final finish.
